His Holiness Sri Swami Satchidananda. 1914-2002 |
Swami Satchidananda speaking to the crowds |
Sri Gurudev was invited to America in 1966
In 1969 The Woodstock festival was presented. No one guessed that it would
attract the huge number of people it did. There was, in the beginning much
turmoil. Too many people, not enough food or toilet facilities, and a lot
of drugs. It was a dangerous, highly combustible situation that had the potential
to become a very serious problem.
What shifted that possible negative situation into the loving peaceful event
it became? I believe that shift was due to Swami Satchidananda. Swamiji was
flown to woodstock. There he said, “The whole world is watching you.
The entire world is going to know what the American youth can do for humanity.
America is helping everybody in the material field but the time has come for
America to help the whole world with spirituality also.”
Sri Swami Satchidananda made his home in America and his life was dedicated to bringing peace to the world. He was a leader in the interfaith movement. His motto was “Truth is one, paths are many”
Swamiji received many awards including the Juliet Hollister Interfaith Award at the United Nations and the U Thant Peace Award. Other recipients include Pope John Paul II, Mother Theresa and Nelson Mandala.
